Observational network of Uzhydromet

The need in the provision of users with hydrometeorological data and forecasting and analytical information based on it presents the main objectives and tasks of hydrometeorological monitoring. State observation system is the combined measuring-and-information system prescribed for the systematic observations and control over the changes of the environment conditions and comprises a part of the Global Observation System (GOS). In accordance with GOS regulations different observations of the environment are carried out:

  1. Meteorological
  2. Hydrological
  3. Agrometeorological
  4. Upper-air
  5. Air pollution
  6. Radiometric
  7. Surface water contamination
  8. Soil contamination
  9. Mudflow
  10. Snow avalanche

Stationary operation network of Uzhydromet includes

  • 80 meteorological stations
  • 16 hydrological stations and 129 riverine gauging stations
  • 3 lake stations and 9 lake gauging stations
  • 3 snow avalanching stations
  • 61 agrometeorological stations and 34 agrometeorological gauging stations
  • 77 stations of the control over the atmospheric air quality
  • 3 upper-air stations

Meteorological observations

Are carried out at 80 meteorological stations. The observations are made every 3 hours (8 fixed-time observations) in a day.

At the stations the following parameters and conditions are observed:

  • weather conditions;
  • atmospheric phenomena;
  • dangerous and hazardous phenomena;
  • air temperature and humidity;
  • wind direction and velocity;
  • atmospheric pressure;
  • temperature of soil surface;
  • meteorological range of visibility;
  • height of the lower cloud limit;
  • ice-and-rime deposits;
  • number and type of clouds;
  • amount of recorded atmospheric precipitation;
  • conditions of underlying surface;
  • snow cover depth and its characteristics on the permanent ground and on the snow course;
  • registration of the daily temperature trend, of the relative air humidity, sunshine duration, intensity of liquid precipitation;
  • measurements of the soil temperature at the different depth layers on the sites with bare surface and under the natural cover;
  • observations of the atmospheric phenomena;
  • measurement of the snow cover depth, definition of its characteristics on the permanent ground and on the snow course;
  • minimum and maximum air temperature;

Hydrological observations

Are conducted at: 16 hydrological stations and 129 hydrological gauging stations, 3 lake stations and 9 gauging stations.

The following observations are carried out at the stations:

  • water level;
  • discharge and sedimentation;
  • water temperature;
  • conditions of water object;
  • hazardous hydrological phenomena;

Level is measured 2 times a day (8 and 20h), if level recorder is available Ц every hour; conditions of water object and temperature are measured 2 times a day; level and sedimentation are measured 3-4 times per month.

Agrometeorological observations

Are conducted at 63 agrometeorological stations, 34 agrometeorological gauging stations.

The following parameters are observed:

  • phases of the crops development;
  • state of the crops;
  • height state of the crops;
  • density of the crops;
  • accumulation of productivity elements;

Observations are made 1 time per 2 days.

Upper-air observations

Observations are conducted at 3 upper-air stations (stations are mothballed now). Meteorological parameters are measured at the height up to 40 km.

The following parameters are measured at the stations:

  • temperature;
  • pressure;
  • relative air humidity;
  • direction and velocity of airflow;

Observations on the pollutants in atmospheric air

Observations are conducted at 65 stationary gauging stations and 12 route sites.

The following parameters are measured:

  • mean concentration of pollutants (22 элемента);
  • content of pollutants in atmospheric precipitation;
  • density of radioactive fallouts from atmosphere;
  • intensity of gamma-radiance;

Atmospheric air is sampled every day (except Sunday) at 7, 13, 19 h at stationary gauging stations. Route observations are conducted in accordance with special programs. Radioactive fallouts are sampled 1 time per week.

Radiometric observations

Observations are conducted according to separate program at 69 meteorological stations.

The following quantities are measured:

  • density of radioactive fallouts from atmosphere;
  • concentration of the long existing resulting beta-activity of aerosols
  • intensity of gamma-radiance;

Observations on the surface water quality

Observations are made at hydrological gauging stations at 107 gauging lines.

Following hydrochemical and hydrobiological characteristics of the water objects are measured:

  • biochemical consumption of oxygen in water;
  • temperature ;
  • mineralization;
  • specific electric conductivity;
  • main anions, cations and pollutants (more than 30 elements);
  • trophic level;
  • state of periphyton, zoobenthos and mactophytes;

Control of measurements is made 1 time a month, for several sites Ц in the main phases of hydrological regime (6-8 times a year).

Observations on contaminants in the top-soil

The observations are made in a form of the route inspections on the territory of 212 households, around 15 towns and big industrial enterprises.

The following parameters are measured:

  • pH;
  • humus content;
  • content of heavy metals;
  • content of pollutants;

The farm lands are monitored 2 times a year (in spring and autumn). The control over the industrial and urbanized territories is made 1 time per 5 years.

Mudflow observations

The observations are realized via the route and airborne visual surveys of the mudflow basins and with application of the remote sensing methods.

Snow-measuring and snow avalanche observations

Snow measuring surveys at Uzhydromet are carried out by the network subdivisions and by the Service of Monitoring of hazardous hydrometeorological phenomena.

By the results of 10-day snow surveys the information from 6 subdivisions is transmitted to the Department of hydrological forecasts and calculations of HMC where it is used for the producing of hydrological forecasts.

Department of monitoring of hazardous hydrometeorological phenomena (DMHHMP) carries out airborne visual snow measuring observations over airborne snow measuring points in 7 basins on the territory of Republic of Uzbekistan; the snow density is estimated with the use of landing operation.

Snow avalanche observations are executed at 3 snow avalanche stations as well as the route and airborne visual surveys of the territory
